The environment in Rome had many impacts on their culture. For example, the expansion of Rome was partly driven by resource shortages. They required lots of timber for mining, heating, construction, and the production of iron and other materials. This led to the Roman empire becoming as large as it was. They also required lots of food and grain to support the empire. Also, Northern Europe was where they would turn for precious metals, like gold, iron, lead, and silver.
